New Astro
New Astro is a bold and versatile typeface inspired by childhood memories, particularly the playful and rounded aesthetics of logos from the 1980s and 1990s. Developed during the COVID lockdown, the design process was influenced by ITC Bauhaus, as seen in the Playmobil logo, and other nostalgic brand elements from toy packaging, magazines, and advertisements. The typeface retains the bold and compact characteristics of Bauhaus ITC but refines its rhythm with a more geometric and dynamic structure. Key modifications include slanting cuts in letters like a b d p and q as well as a more modern, minimal e and a compact s inspired by Aldo Novarese’s STOP font. Additional stylistic variations were created for letters such as a s y w A E F L S and X to offer a range of expressions from playful to structured. New Astro features five weights along with a soft version reminiscent of the original Playmobil aesthetic. With its rich stylistic set and balance between retro inspiration and contemporary refinement, it is particularly suited for titles, subtitles, and modern branding projects.
